[UK] National Archives Makes Available 19th Century Naturalization Records

Posted by: Jan Meisels Allen

The National Archives of the United Kingdom announced they made available 19th century immigrant naturalization records. The period covers 1801-1871 and 7,000 people who applied for British citizenship during that time period.  The records include:
• all naturalization applications to the Secretary of State, 1844-1871
 • some naturalizations by private Act of Parliament, 1801-1868
• some letters applying for denization, 1801-1840
(denization as defined by The Free Dictionary: “The act by which a foreigner becomes a subject of England; but he has not the rights either of a natural born subject, nor of one who has become naturalized.”

I tried several name searches and was able to find their results for the records but if I wanted to access the actual documents there was a charge.
